RESOURCE PROGRAMS

Bloorview School provides educational programs for students who require intensive rehabilitation as a result of surgery, chronic illness or acquired brain injury and for students who have complex medical needs.

Educational programs are available for inpatients or day patients of the Brain Injury Rehab Team (BIRT), Specialized Orthopaedic and Developmental Rehab (SODR) or Complex Continuing Care (CCC) programs at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

The length of stay and school enrolment depend on medical and therapy needs and rate of recovery.

Resource Classrooms

In each classroom, qualified special education teachers and support staff provide educational programs for students based on the Ontario Curriculum.

Resource classroom placements are available to students ages four to twenty-one.

The educational environment complements the rehabilitation process for each student.

Participation in the school day varies from student to student and is based on individual needs and therapy schedules.

In addition to the academic program, enrichment opportunities may include music, art, drama, physical education, and library/media studies.

School-wide activities may include concerts, assemblies, awards ceremonies and special days.

 Resource Program Components

School support may include:

  • connection with the home school
  • collaboration with the interdisciplinary team from Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital
  • on-going communication with the family
  • individual educational assessments
  • development of an Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  • academic programming with accommodations and/or modifications

Medical Concerns

Parents must inform the school of allergies or other medical concerns that may affect student safety in the classroom. e.g. seizures, allergies.

If a student carries an EpiPen, a Management of Medical Concerns form must be completed.

School Year

Bloorview School operates on the traditional school year with classes starting the Tuesday after Labour Day and ending the last week of June.

Transition

The successful re-integration of a student to a community school is part of the discharge planning process.  In some cases, the services of a Community Resource Teacher (CRT) may be assigned to facilitate a student’s educational transition.  In collaboration with the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital team, the role of the CRT may include consultative support to students, families, classroom teachers and school board educators.
